Asking people to donate money is never easy. Especially when those donors are young and just making their way into the world. But, non-profit organizations depend on donations from every generation to function and fund their cause. So, if you’re struggling to engage your younger donors, here are some steps to get you one step closer to your goals.
1. Focus your development staff more on face-to-face work and relationship building.
2. Utilize donors who want to build networks with friends and family.
3. Define more specific giving requests and volunteer opportunities, instead of general requests.
4. Keep in mind that technology is a tool to help you engage, not the solution. Utilize many channels for communication and solicitation methods.
5. Don’t expect quick results. Plan on a long-term return on investment for relationship-building efforts.
6. Don’t think Millennials can’t contribute the same way as donors with greater means. Focus your engagement strategies on them just as much as your other donors.
7. Incorporate Millennial donors into strategic planning.
