Keep your Students Engaged as Summer Nears

As summer creeps closer and closer, students are having a difficult time staying focused. As the last month of school winds down, the kids have a tough time not letting their work slip.

Objective: Keep kids focused on the work they still have left to do before summer hits.

Strategy: A few teachers at an elementary school worked together to come up with some little items that would work as rewards for positive behavior and correct school work in the last few weeks of school. The kids would be rewarded points for a few different behaviors such as behaving while others act out, turning in all their homework for each assignment, not goofing off at school events, being on time for class, and coming back from the bathroom or lunch on time. There were many different reasons they could earn points from the teachers. Once they had their points they were able to redeem education based prizes. These included a slide calculator, a flexi ruler, a small jotter, and a spotlight book light.

Result: The teachers saw a huge change in behavior for the last few weeks. While usually it is complete choas, the kids were actually well behaved and still working hard. They thought it was a good idea to have a prize for them to work toward. Parents were also impressed by the results, as they saw a change in the kids’ behavior as well. It was a successful end of the year program that will be ran again next year with new items.
