Objective: A grocery store was noticing just how many plastic and paper bags customers were still using on a regular basis. Even with all the new reusable totes out there, customers were still not putting them to use.
Solution: For Earth Day they wanted to really try and help customers see the many advantages to using reusable grocery bags. They decided that starting mid March and leading all the way up to Earth Day they would give away reusable grocery bags to all customers that spent over $50. This way the customers would leave the store with their new grocery bag and hopefully would come back with it for their next visit.
Result: The grocery store began to see more people coming in with their signature Earth Day bag as well as more frequent use. Although the decrease in plastic bag usage was small at first, even the small change is a big help. This made them conclude that each year they will run this same promotion to keep weeding out all the plastic bag usage and create a more earth friendly environment in their store.
