Objective
A medium-sized technology company lost 60% of their third-year employees. To increase employee retention, the company established a recognition program for years of service.
Strategy
Managers decided to reward employees for years one through five and again at years ten and twenty.
The company logo resembled an eagle, therefore the company wanted to use an eagle as the symbol of recognition. During the employees’ first four years, they were rewarded with individual Crystal Tofino Coaster etched with the company logo. At the end of four years, the employees had a complete set of the Crystal Tofino Coasters.
The managers chose to use the attractive Bronze Eagle Head to commemorate the fifth year of employment. For the tenth year, the elite Bronze Eagle was presented, and for their 20th year, they chose the elegant crystal Crystal Eagle Head on Black Base.
The human resources department integrated the recognition program into other employee relations programs. Each employee received a copy of a brochure that human resources produced which outlined the importance of the recognition program. Human resources also trained the managers on how to properly present recognition awards to their employees.
Results
At the first recognition event, the company rewarded 60% of their employees for reaching a year of service milestone. The employees were very receptive to the recognition program and felt appreciated as a result. In the first 12 months of the program, the company experienced a 20% decrease in employee turnover.
