5 Tips for Non-Profits to Engage Online

It can sometimes be a big challenge dealing with social media when there are more important things to deal with concerning your non-profit. Raising money, thanking donors and keeping the wheels on the bus can take up quite a bit of your day. However, fostering an online relationship is becoming just as important as face-to-face relationships. Especially with the shift in the generation of donors. Here are a few tips to get you started.

1. Identify what you’re most passionate about within your organization on Twitter, Facebook or a blog. If you’re not excited, why should your donors be?

2. Cultivate actual discussions. Articles and lists are great, but they don’t build relationships. Give your fans an opportunity to share their feelings.

3. Rework content to keep things short for online portals. Make it more informal and post in small snippets to keep them coming back for more. Include links to full articles for those wanting all the information.

4. Respond ASAP. Good, bad or ugly, if discussions arise – which is the whole goal – be prepared to answer questions right away. Let your community know you’re accessible and you’re listening to concerns.

5. Ask questions. Use polls in Facebook, tweets in Twitter or comment threads on a blog. Engage your community of followers to find out what they really think of your organization or what you could be doing better.
